Vesuvius dominates the beautiful gulf of Naples and it is the most known volcano in the world which still attracts the mass media attention. The itinerary starts from 1000m high and it finishes at 1175m. We also go through some hairpin turn from which the view is fascinating. What is extraordinary is observing the previous lava flow really near your position. During our climb, we can notice the old Somma Volcano which is separated from Vesuvius by Gigante Valley. We walk along the crater until we arrive at Capannuccia: here, we start climbing down.
From funicular railway station, we head for the mountain peak. Our position gives us the opportunity to admire the Vesuvius which dominates Sarno River plain. After that, we lose ourselves in the centuries-old beech forest. Surrounded by a timeless spectacular atmosphere, we continue to the ''neviere'' zone where high beeches enclose particular pits. Those are natural pits in which they used to squash accumulated snow, in a not-so-distant past. In this way, snow was well preserved near the cool beeches. Then, all that ''freezed'' snow was cut in some blocks in order to be moved to valley during hot periods. The snow factory finished at the beginning of the 20th century, but still nowadays beeches show its signs.
